October is Non-GMO month, and what better way to raise awareness around the transparency in our food system than discussing why shopping for products that haven’t been genetically modified is important.
However, to understand the importance, we must first dive into what makes something a GMO.
What is a GMO?
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
These days, it’s hard to go to the grocery store and avoid GMO products, because 80 percent of foods in supermarkets are genetically modified and at least 90 percent of soy, cotton and corn are grown through genetic engineering.
Are GMO’s Bad for You?
Sure, GMO farming can make things easier for food production, but there are concerns surrounding how they can affect the environment and if consumption of GMOS can cause illness and allergies.
While there is a lack of long-term studies, the increased growth of “super weeds” and “super bugs” causes for an increase in pesticide and toxicity that takes a toll on farmers and potentially the health of consumers.
Non-GMO Farming Supports Biodiversity
A healthy planet means healthy people. Our agricultural system produces food, fiber, fuel and provides a valuable ecosystem. If our farms and food sources are filled with nutrient-poor foods or pollute the environment, it will take a toll on us as a society.
Biodiversity is a key component to this as well. When the range of crops and organisms are reduced by GMO farming, we lose the resources and resilience that comes from a biodiverse environment. If the same crop is created year after year on the same land, it affects the soil health and allows for more problems with pests infecting the product, thus increasing pesticides and toxins that can potentially never be washed-off various crops.
By shopping non-GMO products, you’re helping organic farmers maintain biodiversity among crops and animals.
Our Natural Approach
Forces of Nature plant-based and homeopathic medicines are used to treat a wide array of health issues ranging from pain relief to skin conditions such as acne, warts, eczema, fungal infections, and hemorrhoids. And with our skin being the largest and most vulnerable organ on our body, what you put on it matters.
We not only care about the impact of our treatments on your health and the planet, but so much so that we insist on a quality standard in all our medicines. When you use a Forces of Nature product, you can be assured that it’s been produced with the best medicinal plants and will never include a GMO ingredient. We avoid any additional unwanted chemicals, which can slow down healing, or in some cases, worsen conditions.
In fact, all our products are Non-GMO Project verified. When you see the Non-GMO Project butterfly certification mark, you can be assured the food or product you are using is truly non-GMO.
So, next time you’re shopping, be sure to check the label and know what you’re putting into your body.
